HANDCRAFTS
Emerging into the process of the creative arts we learn about the world and the creative forces which have made it, as well as the creative forces active in us.

wool story board

We explore and learn to play with color, clay, handcrafts, music, speech, drama and movement. In envisioning Anthroposophy, Rudolf Steiner opened exciting new vistas for all forms of art. At Rudolf Steiner College, master teachers offer art courses in a variety of different media. All students in full-time courses engage in one or more art form. Many courses are available for enrollment year long. Check Events Calendar for more information.

PAINTING
A multiplicity of styles emerged in the early decades of the twentieth century as artists sought to break through to new modes of perception and expression in their quest for the spiritual in art. Rudolf Steiner's research, building on Goethe's color theory, offers the painter a way to penetrate the objective laws of color and discover how form grows out of the inherent gesture and dynamic interplay of colors. This entering into and working out of color becomes a meditative and therapeutic process enlivening and inspiring the artist.

•Painting exercises in the veil method (layering of transparent surfaces of color) guide this color exploration and encourage the development of perceptive powers and individual style.

•In wet-method painting, students are introduced to an approach that has found worldwide application in the Waldorf school movement. It allows for an experience of the joyful, dynamic and healing qualities of color. Motifs from the seasons of the year, the festivals and the Waldorf curriculum are explored.

• DRAWING

• Drawing exercises with charcoal, crayon, and chalk, practiced out of observation and imagination, fortify the capacity to deal with the more formative aspects of color. Exercises focus on the four kingdoms of nature.

• Study of Goethe's color theory, selections from Rudolf Steiner's lectures on art and color, and works by the Great Masters establish a wide perspective from which to experience the art of painting.
