Edmund Knighton’s Embryology, Neurology, and Mindfulness – an Exploration of Child Development

Storytelling is vital in the life of a child. It can provide security and allow them to enter more imaginatively into the content and language of the story. When teachers make stories their own and pass them on to children, deep connections are made.

In this workshop, we will create a foundation of the science behind storytelling and enrich it with the art of storytelling.

Neurologically, stories are images of the sequential myelin process in the brain that accompanies maturation. Using this process as a working model, we will do story exercises using a process of see, say, and do. Pedagogically this refers to the sequencing of storytelling activities to create analogs of the learning process itself.

Using the four elements of earth, water, air and fire as analogs to story lines, we will work with stories that follow the developmental stages in the Waldorf curriculum of Adam and Eve, Krishna and Arjuna, and the Native American tale, The Story of Jumping Mouse. A final element in story is the inclusion of biographical excerpts shared with a partner that parallel the episodes in the stories.
